moving bed filter  is an aerobe or anaerobe reactor barrel, which is filled with water. In the reactor barrel  a moving carrier is being suspended.

The most important part of this cleaning is formed by thousands of synthetic particles that are about just as heavy as water.

By the special shape of the moving carrier comes a screened growing surface for the bacterial layer. These carriers have a specific area of about 600 m2 per m3.

By giving air, pumping or mixing  the  particles are moving with the help of but little energy.

The system is in the long run almost insensible for things that can make an active sludge system instable, such as:

  • sudden change in temperature and pH

  • shortage of nutrients and add of chemicals

The  moving bed system is a self-regulating process which is very reliable. Moreover,  it not so spacious then the active sludge-system.

The construction and processing is simple.
No problems are created when the sludge is washed away , the sludge is re-circulated  and the surplus of sludge is purged. The reactor can work aerobe and anaerobe, as you can see on the drawing. ( see left )

The costs of maintenance and the costs for functioning are low. It is easy to modify an already existing active sludge-system.
